About

This is a website with a difference...designed to support parents raising children with hearing loss. Flying Colours will help you feel informed, supported and understood while you navigate a new world, one challenge and opportunity at a time. It’s all here, in plain English. So, get yourself a cup of tea and start reading. Whatever stage of the journey you are on, we’ll walk it with you.

Flying Colours is a resource specifically developed for parents with a young deaf or hard of hearing child. It covers published research, stories from parents with a lived experience and summaries of key subjects. This resource has been created by Deaf Children Australia, and is based on what parents told us what they wanted to know.

Flying Colours has been fully funded through the Australian Government, Department of Social Services, and ILC program. www.dss.gov.au

We asked parents to tell us what was missing and what this should look like...

We connected with over 400 parents of a deaf and hard of hearing child to find out what would help them navigate their days following a diagnosis. We were inundated with suggestions.

This is what they told us:

  • easy to use, easy to access, bite sized information, in plain English about deafness, services and Auslan
  • curated research with crisp, short summaries about the key findings
  • lots of links, divided up by subject, to the many sites that are already out there about deafness
  • an easy to use, simple clickable map of helpful services, groups and more
  • ways to meet up with other parents and deaf families
  • and importantly parents wanted to hear from other parents who had a lived experience. From parents who had been on the journey before, who could talk about what they know now, what they have learned and what they are looking forward to.
